Decommunization: the Brezhnev monument will be demolished in Kamianske

The authorities of the city of Kamianske announced plans related to the decommunization of public space, the aim of which is to remove symbols and monuments related to the communist period. As part of these activities, the city decided to demolish the controversial statue of Leonid Brezhnev, which had been located in the city center until now.

Controversial monument under the microscope of decommunization

The statue, depicting the former leader of the Soviet Union Leonid Brezhnev, has been the subject of controversy since its build date in 1975. Brezhnev, being the chief secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, was a heavily criticized figure for his rule, which was often described as a period of repression, restriction of freedom and violation of human rights. For many years, the monument stood as a symbol commemorating the period of Soviet domination, but over time it increasingly gained the status of an unwanted and controversial object.

The decision to demolish the monument was made after long-term debates and consultations with the inhabitants of Kamianske and local social organizations. Public opinion on the monument was divided, but the majority of respondents were in favor of removing the monument due to the negative symbolism and the historical burden associated with the period of its creation.
