The abandoned city of Orbita can get a new life again. The site, located on the territory of the Chigyryna urban territorial community, is considered one of the most promising for the construction of a new nuclear power plant in Ukraine. This was reported to Suspilny in the press service of the Chigyryna city-territorial community.

On this occasion, a working meeting with the representative of "Energoatom" Serhiy Kosenko was held in the Chigyryna City Council.

Energoatom is considering the possibility of reviving

"Energoatom is considering the possibility of reviving the Chigyryn NPP project. In recent years, the site in Chigyryn has again been considered as a place for a possible nuclear power plant, as it has a favorable location and good access to water resources and power grids," - the press service said..

It is still too early to talk about the construction itself. It was about granting a permit to carry out geodetic works of the site, which can be considered for the construction of a nuclear power plant, the press service added. Both sides of the meeting discussed details that may arise at the initial stage of negotiations.

What is known about the ghost town of Orbita?

  • A town for energy workers near Chygyrin, and now Orbita is a settlement without official status. In the 1970s, it was planned to build a thermal power plant there, and then a nuclear power plant, local resident Oleksandr Kyrychenko told Suspilno.
  • Today, the town is an unfinished ruin, a lone chimney of a defunct boiler house towering over the rubble of concrete and about 100 residents. Two 5-story buildings and one store are occupied on the territory.
  • After the Chernobyl accident, construction was stopped, and people began to leave.
